About Us

Our History

Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland was established in 1982 by Dottie Hanson (left) and Rita Jenkins (right) in an effort to address hunger in their community. Our founders scraped together enough change to purchase PO Box 821 – which we still use today – and set to work with no idea where their vision would lead.

Since our establishment, FAKH has grown to serve 42 central, south- central and western Kentucky counties, and has distributed more than 300 million pounds of food and grocery items – the equivalent of over 250 million meals and counting!

You can hear more about the beginnings of our food bank and how much we’ve grown over 40 years from Rita herself.

Our Vision

To provide equitable access to nutritious food, so no one will go hungry.

How do we serve 42 counties? Our work begins with you!

Generous donors give a little – or a lot – to help us secure nutritious food for our neighbors facing hunger. In fact, $0.97 of every dollar donated goes directly to purchasing food and programs fighting hunger.

Annual Reports and Financials

We take our responsibility to help feed our neighbors very seriously – carefully stewarding each food and financial donation that we receive.

Through our network, we are able to efficiently stretch your gift so that each dollar donated acquires nine pounds of food – the equivalent of eight meals.

We are proud of all the work we are able to do and grateful for everyone who makes our mission possible.
